What does a gambling spend tracker do?
A gambling spend tracker is a simple log of what you put in, what you took out and how long you played, set against a limit you choose for the month. This one runs in your browser. It shows your net result, your total time and how much of your limit your losses have used.
It is a mirror, not a gatekeeper. It does not stop play, move money or connect to any account. Its job is to turn a feeling (“I haven’t spent much”) into a number you can look at, which is a useful first step toward more control. If you want the likely cost of a session before you play, a session cost calculator is the right companion.
Why does a gambling tracker help you see the real cost?
Writing down each session replaces memory with a record, and memory can be unreliable. Research on online players links limits and personal feedback with lower gambling, which is the idea a gambling spend tracker is built on. The evidence has limits, so treat it as support for the habit, not a promise of any result.
In a study of 49,560 online players followed for a year, the most intense players who had set a voluntary limit spent significantly less afterward than those who had not. The authors of that Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking paper looked at voluntary deposit limit-setting and long-term spending. It is observational, so it shows an association rather than proof that limits caused the drop.
A second, experimental study randomly assigned 5,528 online players in Norway to groups that saw messages about their own play. Every group that received feedback gambled less than the control group, and the authors concluded that personalized behavioral feedback can change gambling behavior. A log gives you that same kind of feedback, written by you.
Neither study tested this tracker. Both used data from online gambling platforms, and neither says a log will keep anyone within a limit.
How do you use the gambling spend tracker, step by step?
Type your monthly limit in units, then add one row for every session: date, game, minutes, units in and units out. The tracker works out net for each row and updates the totals and the limit bar straight away. Add the row as soon as you finish playing, while the numbers are fresh.
- Enter your limit. Type a number in “Your limit for this month, in units”. A comma or a point both work as the decimal mark. Leave it blank if you only want to log.
- Check the date. The date box starts on today’s date. Change it if you are logging an earlier session.
- Fill in the session. Add the game (up to 40 characters), the minutes played, the units you put in and the units you took out. Blank number boxes count as 0.
- Press Add session. The row appears in the table, the boxes clear and the cursor returns to the Game box so you can log another one.
- Read the summary. Check Time, Net and the limit bar beside the table. The line under the bar tells you how many units are left or how far over you are.
- Fix mistakes. Each row has a Remove button. Remove the row and add it again with the right numbers.
Example: You set a limit of 40 units. After a roulette session of 45 minutes you put in 20 units and took out 12. Add it as 45, 20 and 12. The tracker shows net -8, a time of 0 h 45 m and the bar at 20%, with 32 units left.
How do you choose a monthly limit for your gambling spend tracker?
Choose an amount you could lose in full without it affecting your bills, food, rent, debts or savings, and set it before you play. Decide it on a calm day, away from any game. Then enter it once and treat it as the ceiling for the month, not a target to reach.
GambleAware advises deciding a spending limit for the day, week or month before you gamble and committing to it, and the tracker’s own hint says the same thing: pick a number you could lose without it hurting. The table below shows one way to work it out. The figures are made-up examples, so replace every number with your own.
| Step | Question to ask | Example figure (units) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | What is the total money you have for the month? | 1,000 |
| 2 | How much goes on rent, food, bills and transport first? | 760 |
| 3 | How much goes on debt repayments and savings? | 140 |
| 4 | What is left after steps 2 and 3? (1,000 – 760 – 140) | 100 |
| 5 | What part of that could you lose completely and not miss? Pick less than step 4. | 30 |
| 6 | How much of the leftover stays untouched as a cushion? (100 – 30) | 70 |
If the answer to step 5 is nothing, then nothing is the right limit. Think of the number as a cost, not as money you might get back. Games of chance are built so the average result is a loss, and the limit is how much of that cost you have agreed to carry.
How do you read net, time and the limit bar?
Net is units out minus units in, so a negative number means you finished behind. Time adds all your minutes. The limit bar shows your total net loss as a share of your limit. A win in one session reduces the loss, so the bar tracks the running total across every row.
The bar only fills with losses. If your total net is zero or positive, it shows 0% (with a thin sliver so you can still see it). It stops growing at 100% of the width, but the percentage and the message keep counting. Here is what it shows for a limit of 40 units.
| Total net | Net loss used | Bar percentage | Message under the bar |
|---|---|---|---|
| +10 | 0 | 0% | 40 units left before your limit. |
| -10 | 10 | 25% | 30 units left before your limit. |
| -20 | 20 | 50% | 20 units left before your limit. |
| -40 | 40 | 100% | 0 units left before your limit. |
| -50 | 50 | 125% | You are 10 units over your limit. Stopping now is a good choice. |
A five-session month, worked through
This table follows five invented sessions against a 40-unit limit. Net is units out minus units in, and the last three columns show what the tracker would display after each row is added.
| Date | Game | Min | In | Out | Net | Total net | Limit used | Message |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nov 2 | Roulette | 45 | 20 | 12 | -8 | -8 | 20% | 32 units left |
| Nov 7 | Blackjack | 90 | 30 | 40 | +10 | +2 | 0% | 40 units left |
| Nov 12 | Roulette | 60 | 25 | 5 | -20 | -18 | 45% | 22 units left |
| Nov 19 | Slots | 120 | 40 | 10 | -30 | -48 | 120% | 8 units over |
| Nov 26 | Slots | 30 | 15 | 0 | -15 | -63 | 158% | 23 units over |
Two things stand out. The Nov 7 win pulled the total back to +2, which made it feel like a clean slate, yet 130 units went in over the month and only 67 came out. And the limit was passed on the fourth session, with a fifth session following. A bar that has passed 100% is the signal to stop for the month, not to try to get back to even.
What should you log honestly in a gambling spend tracker?
Log every session, including the short ones, with the real minutes and the real units in and out. The tracker only helps if the log is complete, because a month with missing sessions can look fine on screen while the real cost is higher. Add each row the same day.
The tracker does not define “units in”, so pick one meaning and keep to it. A simple version is the total you put into the session as Units in, and the total you walked away with as Units out. Use the same unit (dollars, pounds, rupees or plain points) for the limit and every row.
Common mistakes
- Logging only the sessions that went well, or only the ones that went badly.
- Rounding minutes down. Time passes faster than it feels, so check a clock or your phone’s screen-time record.
- Counting only the final deposit and not every top-up during a session.
- Treating a win as new room under the limit. A limit is an upper cost for the month, not a balance to spend down and refill.
- Raising the limit after reaching it. If you do, write down why, and look at that note in your review.
The tracker adds up every session in the table, whatever its date, even though the heading says “This month”. To keep the limit bar meaningful, export your data at month end and then clear it so the next month starts at zero.
Where is your gambling spend tracker data stored, and how do you clear it?
Your sessions stay in your own browser and are not sent to Chancepedia. They are saved on your device only if you allow Preferences in the cookie settings. Without that, the log lasts only until you close the page. You can delete everything at any time with Clear all data.
- Saved copy: with Preferences allowed, the log is kept in your browser’s local storage on that device and browser, and nowhere else. A different browser or phone starts empty.
- Not saved: with Preferences off, the page tells you the sessions will not be kept after you close it.
- Clear all data: asks “Delete every session saved on this device?” and, if you confirm, removes every row, your limit and the saved copy.
- Reset (top of the tool): does the same job without the confirmation question, so use it with care.
- Copy a link: the link carries your limit number only, not your sessions. Anyone you send it to would see that limit.
If you share a computer or a phone, clear the data when you finish, or use a private window. Clearing your browser’s site data also removes the saved log.
How do you review your gambling tracker log with someone you trust?
Export CSV downloads your log as a file named chancepedia-tracker.csv, with six columns: Date, Game, Minutes, Units in, Units out and Net. Open it in any spreadsheet, or share it with a friend, partner or counselor for a second pair of eyes. The limit is not in the file, so add it yourself.
Once a month, take ten minutes with the log and go through the checklist below. Print this page or copy the table into a note. The Note column is for your own words.
| Check | Where to find it | Your note |
|---|---|---|
| Was my total net loss within my limit? | Limit bar and the line under it | |
| Which session used the most of the limit? | Net column in the table | |
| How many hours did I play in total? | Time figure at the top of the summary | |
| Did sessions run longer than I planned? | Minutes column | |
| Did I add money after a loss, or play to get back to even? | My own memory, checked against the Units in column | |
| Is every session logged, including short ones? | Date column against my calendar or phone | |
| Did I change my limit this month, and why? | Write the reason here | |
| Should next month’s limit stay, go down or be 0? | Decision, made before I play | |
| Is there anyone I want to talk to about this month? | See the help routes below |
When is it time to get help, and what can a gambling tracker not do?
If you keep passing your limit, if you feel you must hide the log, or if gambling is hurting your money, work, health or relationships, reach out for support. The tracker cannot give you that. Warm, confidential help exists, and asking for it does not mean you have failed at anything.
The NHS page on gambling addiction lists signs such as betting more than you can afford to lose, chasing losses, borrowing money to gamble, and feeling guilty or stressed about it. It includes a short self-check and points to treatment. For help in your country, start with our Get help page, and for practical tools see the Safer play toolkit.
The tracker is a record, and a record alone has limits. It does not:
- block you from playing or pause your play when you pass the limit;
- connect to any casino, betting or bank account, so it only knows what you type;
- check that your entries are true;
- replace bank tools, such as spending limits or gambling payment blocks, which the NHS suggests asking your bank about;
- replace self-exclusion, such as GAMSTOP for online gambling in Great Britain or BetStop, the National Self-Exclusion Register for licensed online and phone providers in Australia. Other places have their own state or national programs, so check your regulator.
These tools work best together: a limit written down, a log kept honestly, and a block or exclusion in place if you need extra protection. Each one is there to protect you, so keep them in place for the full period.
What should you do next with your gambling spend tracker?
Enter your limit now, before you next play, and set a reminder to add each session the same day. Then put a date in your calendar for the monthly review. Your first month of honest records is worth more than any later total, because it shows you where you actually stand.
Pair the log with a few other steps. Work out the cost of a session in advance with a session cost calculator, read about the house edge so the numbers make sense, and keep the Safer play toolkit close. If the log worries you, talk to someone you trust, or head to Get help today.
How to read the result
Time is the sum of all minutes, shown as hours and minutes. Net is the sum of units out minus units in, with a plus sign when positive. Each row also shows its own net. The limit bar shows your net loss as a percentage of your limit, and the line under it says how many units are left or how far over you are. Wins reduce the loss, so a total net at or above zero shows 0% (the bar keeps a thin sliver). The bar stops at full width past 100%, but the percentage and the message keep counting. With no limit entered, no bar or message appears. The note below the buttons says whether your log is being saved in this browser.
How it is calculated
For each session: net = units out minus units in. Blank number boxes count as 0, minutes are rounded to a whole number, a comma works as the decimal mark, and the game name is cut to 40 characters. Totals: time = sum of minutes, shown as floor(minutes / 60) h and minutes mod 60 m. Total net = sum of (out minus in) across every row in the table. Net loss = the larger of 0 and minus total net. Limit used (%) = net loss / limit x 100, rounded to a whole number for display. Units left = limit minus net loss. Units over = net loss minus limit. A limit of 0 or a blank limit is treated as no limit. The tracker adds every row in the table, whatever its date.
Worked example
Worked example
The tool starts empty. Enter a limit of 40. Add five sessions: Nov 2 roulette 45 min, in 20, out 12 (net -8); Nov 7 blackjack 90 min, in 30, out 40 (net +10); Nov 12 roulette 60 min, in 25, out 5 (net -20); Nov 19 slots 120 min, in 40, out 10 (net -30); Nov 26 slots 30 min, in 15, out 0 (net -15). Totals: 345 minutes (5 h 45 m), 130 units in, 67 units out, net -63. Net loss 63 / 40 x 100 = 157.5%, shown as 158%. The line under the bar reads: You are 23 units over your limit. After the fourth session the total net was -48, shown as 120% and 8 units over.
Limits
The tracker records what you type and nothing else. It does not block play, send alerts, connect to casino, betting or bank accounts, check that entries are true, or replace bank gambling blocks, GAMSTOP, BetStop or other self-exclusion. The limit bar measures net loss, not units in, so it does not show how much you put in overall. It adds every row whatever its date, even though the heading says This month, so export and clear at month end. The log is kept only in this browser and only when Preferences are allowed; otherwise it ends when you close the page. Copy a link includes your limit only. Results are a record of your entries, not advice.
