A 10 unit pass line bet at 30 rounds an hour (assumed pace): 300 units staked, about 4.24 units average cost an hour. 10 units on any seven at 30 rolls an hour: 300 units staked, about 50 units average cost.

Rules of this table

  • Come-out roll: 7 or 11 wins the pass line, 2, 3 or 12 loses it. Any other total becomes the point.
  • Don't pass: wins on 2 or 3, loses on 7 or 11, 12 is a tie. After a point, wins on a 7 before the point.
  • Odds up to 3 times on 4 and 10, 4 times on 5 and 9, 5 times on 6 and 8, paid at true odds.
  • Place 4/10 pays 9 to 5, 5/9 pays 7 to 5, 6/8 pays 7 to 6. Field pays 1 to 1 (2 pays 2 to 1, 12 pays 3 to 1).
  • Any seven 4 to 1, any craps 7 to 1, eleven 15 to 1, aces and boxcars 30 to 1.
  • You start with 1,000 play chips. Chips have no cash value.

This craps simulator lets you roll the dice with play-money chips, place the main craps bets, and see the exact house edge of every bet while you play. It also keeps a table of dice totals next to the exact chances, so you can watch random rolls settle toward the maths.

Chips have no value and cannot be cashed out. Craps looks complicated on a casino layout, but the game comes down to a handful of bets and one number, the 7.

How does this craps simulator work?

Press Roll the dice to throw two dice. The first roll of a round is the come-out roll. If a point is set, the round continues until the point repeats or a 7 shows. You start with 1,000 play chips, place bets before each roll, and see every result in the roll log and the stats panel.

  1. Place a pass line or don’t pass bet before the come-out roll.
  2. Roll. A 7 or 11 wins the pass line and a 2, 3 or 12 loses it. Any other total becomes the point.
  3. Add odds once a point is set. Odds are allowed up to 3 times the flat bet on 4 and 10, 4 times on 5 and 9, and 5 times on 6 and 8.
  4. Roll until the point or a 7. The pass line wins if the point repeats before a 7. Don’t pass is the reverse: it wins when a 7 comes first, and a come-out 12 is a tie.
  5. Try Just roll 1,000 times (no bets) to fill the dice-total chart and compare it with the expected chance of each total.

Come and don’t come bets are not included in this version. A reminder appears after 15 minutes of play, and nothing is saved to your browser or sent anywhere.

What are the odds of each dice total?

A 7 is the most likely total of two dice, at 6 chances in 36 (16.67%), and 2 and 12 are the least likely, at 1 in 36 (2.78%). Every craps payout is built from these counts, which is why the 7 is both the biggest winner for some bets and the main danger for others.

Which craps bets have the lowest house edge?

The pass line and don’t pass have the lowest house edge among bets with a house advantage, at 1.41% and 1.36%. Odds bets have no edge at all because they pay the true odds. The bets in the middle of the layout, including the one-roll bets, cost from about 3% to nearly 17%.

Pay attention to the wording on the table. The field bet is 2.78% when the 12 pays 3 to 1 and 5.56% when it pays only 2 to 1. Many layouts print both numbers the same way, so read the payout, not the layout.

How is the pass line house edge worked out?

The pass line wins 244 times in 495 rounds and loses 251 times, so its house edge is 7/495, or 1.41%. The 7 or 11 on the come-out wins 8 times in 36. A 2, 3 or 12 loses 4 times in 36. A point of 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 is set the remaining 24 times, and the point then wins before a 7 between 1 time in 3 (on 4 and 10) and 5 times in 11 (on 6 and 8).

Example: a 4 is set with probability 3/36, and then wins if a 4 comes before a 7, which is 3 chances against 6, or 1 in 3. Adding every point gives 244/495 = 49.29% for a pass line win and 50.71% to lose, a gap of 1.41%.

What do odds bets do to the house edge?

Odds bets lower your overall cost by adding money at the true price. The more odds you take compared with your flat bet, the smaller the house edge becomes as a share of everything you have staked. With 3 times odds the combined edge falls to about 0.47%, and with 10 times odds it is about 0.18%.

Odds taken on the pass lineHouse edge on total money staked
None1.41%
1 times0.85%
2 times0.61%
3 times0.47%
5 times0.33%
10 times (not offered in this simulator)0.18%
Pass line plus odds, as a share of the average total staked. Calculated as 7/495 divided by (1 + 2m/3), where m is the odds multiple. The simulator allows 3-4-5 times odds.

Odds do not remove the cost. The 1.41% on the flat bet is still taken in full, and more money is now on the table, so you can lose more per round. The percentage falls, but the amount per hour may not fall at all if you bet larger.

Is online craps the same as free craps?

Online craps uses the same dice, bets and payouts as a casino table. Free craps does too, with play money. A real-money online game adds deposits, a random number generator or a live dealer, and sometimes variants like crapless craps or bubble craps with their own payouts. The edges above apply to standard payouts only.

Always read the paytable before you play any version. Chancepedia does not link to operators or rank them. If you want to check that a site is licensed, look up its licence number on the regulator’s own register.

What does a session of craps cost?

At a typical table, rounds are slower than in roulette, and the cost depends on which bets you make. A player making only a 10 unit pass line bet with no odds, at 30 rounds an hour (an assumed pace), stakes 300 units and loses about 4.24 units an hour on average. The same hour on any-seven bets, at 16.67%, would cost about 50 units.

Mixing bets raises the cost. Use the craps odds calculator, the dice probability calculator or the expected loss calculator with your own bet sizes.

Do hot dice or lucky shooters exist?

No. Dice have no memory, so a roller who has made five passes in a row has the same chance of a 7 on the next throw as anyone else. Streaks of repeated numbers happen by chance, and you can see them in the roll log. Rolling 1,000 times in the simulator will show long runs on both sides.

Does playing free craps make real gambling more likely?

A 2022 survey of Australian 12 to 17 year olds found that simulated gambling play was linked to gambling for money and to gambling problems, and that the amount of money spent on simulated games was the stronger predictor. The survey was a snapshot, so it cannot show that the games cause the later gambling.

What should you try next?

  • Play 300 rounds with only the pass line and then 300 with only any seven, and compare how far apart the results are.
  • Add 3 times odds to your pass line and see how the average cost changes in the panel.
  • Roll 1,000 times with no bets and compare each total with its expected chance in the table above.
  • Work out the cost of your favorite bet with the expected loss calculator.

How to read your session

The panel shows chips, net result and the average result at each bet's house edge. The dice-total chart compares how often each total came up with the exact chance, so you can see rolls drifting toward the maths over many throws.

How it is calculated

House edge is the average loss as a share of a bet. The pass line wins 244 of 495 rounds and loses 251, so 7/495 = 1.41%. Don't pass loses 244/495 and wins 949/1980 with the 12 a tie: 3/220 = 1.36%. Place 6 or 8 pays 7 to 6 against true 6 to 5: 1/66 = 1.52%. Place 5 or 9 pays 7 to 5 against 3 to 2: 4.00%. Place 4 or 10 pays 9 to 5 against 2 to 1: 6.67%. Odds bets pay true odds: 0%.

No. Chips have no cash value and cannot be bought, won or cashed out. There are no prizes or bonuses, and the simulator never asks for a deposit.

Why is a 7 the most common roll?

Six of the 36 equally likely dice combinations add up to 7: 1 and 6, 2 and 5, 3 and 4, each in two orders. No other total has as many combinations, so a 7 comes up 16.67% of the time.
