What does the craps house edge chart show?

The chart lists 20 common craps bets in two groups: those at 4.00% or lower and those above it. Each row gives the payout, the house edge and a note on how the bet works. Edges are measured as a share of the amount bet on one resolved bet, or one roll for single-roll bets.

Which craps bets have the lowest house edge?

Free odds have no edge, but you can only take them after a pass line or don’t pass bet. The don’t pass is 1.36%, the pass line 1.41% and place 6 or 8 is 1.52%. These are the lowest edges on a craps table. Everything else costs more.

Which craps bets have the highest house edge?

One-roll proposition bets cost the most. Any seven pays 4 to 1 and has a 16.67% edge, the highest on the chart. Hard 4 and 10, any craps, three and eleven are all 11.11%, and two or twelve at 30 to 1 is 13.89%. These bets also resolve every roll, so money moves fastest.

Some casinos pay less on certain bets. Eleven at 14 to 1 raises the edge from 11.11% to 16.67%, and two or twelve at 29 to 1 raises it from 13.89% to 16.67%. Check the payouts printed on the table.

How do free odds lower the combined edge?

Free odds pay at true odds, so they add money to the bet without adding any edge. That lowers the edge on your total money wagered, from 1.41% with no odds to 0.85% at 1x odds, 0.37% at 3-4-5x, and 0.18% at 10x. The pass line portion still carries its 1.41% edge.

Odds allowed None 1x 2x 3-4-5x 5x 10x 100x
Edge on total bet 1.41% 0.85% 0.61% 0.37% 0.33% 0.18% 0.02%
Edge on the average total money wagered, with odds taken on every point.

A lower percentage is not a smaller expected loss. The odds bet puts more money at risk, so swings get bigger even though the average loss comes from the pass line bet alone.

How is the craps house edge measured?

The edge is the expected profit divided by the amount bet, shown as a loss. Ties are normally ignored. For don’t pass and don’t come, the 1.36% figure counts ties as money bet, while 1.40% counts only bets that are resolved. Both appear in published tables, so check which one a source uses.

Buy and lay bets charge a 5% fee. The 4.76% buy figure assumes the fee is charged on every bet. If a casino takes the fee only on a win, the edge on a buy bet is lower: 1.67% on 4 and 10, 2.00% on 5 and 9, and 2.27% on 6 and 8.

What does the edge cost over a session?

Multiply the total amount you bet by the edge. If you make 100 pass line bets of 10 units, you wager 1,000 units and the average cost is 1,000 x 1.41% = 14.1 units. The same 100 bets on any seven cost 1,000 x 16.67% = 166.7 units. Real results swing well above and below these averages.

A bet with a low edge still loses over time. Decide your limit before you start, and see the safer play toolkit if you want help with that.

What does the chart not cover?

The chart covers common bets only. It does not cover every proposition bet, odds limits that differ between casinos, or side bets and variants. Dice have no memory, so no pattern of bets changes the edge on any bet. Payouts and fees vary by venue.

How to read the result

Read down the House edge column. Lower is cheaper. The edge is the share of each bet the casino keeps on average, measured per resolved bet, or per roll for one-roll bets. Rows marked with a fee assume 5%. A low edge is still a loss over time, and free odds can only be taken behind a line bet.

How it is calculated

House edge = -(expected return / amount bet). Pass line = 7/495 = 1.414%. Place 6 or 8: win chance 5/11 at 7 to 6 gives 1 - 5/11 x 13/6 = 1.52%. Hard 6 or 8: 1/11 x 9 - 10/11 = -9.09%. Any seven: 6/36 x 4 - 30/36 = -16.67%. Free odds blended edge = 1.414% / (1 + expected odds multiple), using the chance of each point. All figures were recomputed in code from the 36 dice outcomes.

Worked example

Worked example

A player makes 100 pass line bets of 10 units, wagering 1,000 units. Average cost = 1,000 x 1.414% = 14.1 units. The same 100 bets on any seven cost 1,000 x 16.67% = 166.7 units. With 3-4-5x odds the pass line portion still costs 1.41% of the line bets, which is 0.37% of the average total wagered.

Limits

The chart covers common bets only, not every proposition or side bet. Payouts, fees and odds limits vary by casino. The don't pass figure is shown per roll including pushes, and per resolved bet it is 1.40%. Edges are long-run averages, not predictions for a session, and no betting system changes them.

Questions

What is the best bet in craps?

Free odds are the best bet because they have no house edge, but you can only take them behind a pass line or don't pass bet. Of the bets you can make first, the don't pass has a 1.36% edge and the pass line 1.41%, the lowest on the table.

What is the house edge on the pass line and don't pass?

The pass line edge is 1.41% and the don't pass edge is 1.36%, counting ties as money bet. If ties are left out, the don't pass edge is 1.40%. Both bets pay 1 to 1, and don't pass is a bet against the shooter that pushes on a 12.

Are free odds really free in craps?

Free odds have a 0% house edge, so they cost nothing in expected terms. They are not free in money terms: they put more of your money at risk, and you must first place a pass line or don't pass bet, which has a 1.41% or 1.36% edge.

What is the worst bet in craps?

Among common bets on the chart, any seven is the worst, with a 16.67% house edge. It pays 4 to 1 and wins 1 roll in 6. Two, twelve and eleven can also reach 16.67% if the casino pays 29 to 1 or 14 to 1 instead of 30 to 1 and 15 to 1.

Is the field bet a good bet in craps?

No. The field has a 5.56% edge when the 12 pays 2 to 1, and 2.78% when it pays 3 to 1. It wins on 4 of the 7 totals but loses on 5, 6, 7 and 8, which come up often. Check which payout your table uses.
