How does South Africa Lotto work? South Africa Lotto is a six-number draw in the South African National Lottery. A player picks six numbers from 1 to 52. Six main numbers and a bonus ball are drawn, and prizes depend on how many main numbers match and whether the bonus ball also matches. The National Lotteries Commission regulates the National Lottery, and the lottery is run by a licensed operator. Chancepedia is not the operator and does not sell tickets. What are the odds of winning the Lotto jackpot? The jackpot odds are 1 in 20,358,520, the number of different sets of six numbers that can be picked from 52. This is our own calculation: 52 × 51 × 50 × 49 × 48 × 47, divided by 720. That is about twice as hard as the Irish Lotto jackpot, because 52 numbers produce about 20 million sets and 47 numbers produce about 11 million. If each set were one second, the full list would run for about 236 days. When are the draws and where do the results appear? The draws take place twice a week, on Wednesday and Saturday at 21:00. This page shows the latest result, and each draw has its own page with the numbers and facts about the draw. How do you claim a prize, and is there a deadline? Prize claims are handled by the operator under rules set with the National Lotteries Commission. The claim steps and the deadline depend on the prize, so check the operator's official claim page before you rely on a date. Tax on lottery winnings needs its own checked guide, so it is not covered on this page. Where can you get help with gambling? The South African Responsible Gambling Foundation offers free counselling on 0800 006 008 (toll-free, 24 hours a day, every day). Our responsible play page explains how to reach it and lists a few ways to keep spending in check.

Questions

Does the bonus ball count towards the jackpot?

No. The jackpot needs all six main numbers. The bonus ball only matters for some of the lower prizes.

Is any set of numbers more likely than another?

No. Every set of six numbers has the same chance, 1 in 20,358,520, whether it is a pattern like 1 to 6 or a mix that looks random.

Who regulates the lottery in South Africa?

The National Lotteries Commission regulates the National Lottery, sports pools and society lotteries, according to its website.

Does Chancepedia sell tickets?

No. We publish results and explain how the game works. We do not sell tickets or link to ticket sellers.

What should I do first if I think I have won South Africa Lotto?

Check your numbers against the official result from the official operator, not only against this page. Then keep your ticket safe and do not post photos of it online. Read the operator's claim steps before you go anywhere. If the prize is large, consider independent advice before you decide what to do next.

How long do I have to claim a South Africa Lotto prize?

The operator sets the deadline and it can change. Chancepedia does not print a number it could not confirm, so check the claim period on the official page of the official operator as soon as you think you have won.

How do I collect my South Africa Lotto winnings?

The official page of the official operator lists where and how to claim. Chancepedia is not a lottery and does not pay or process prizes.

Do I pay tax on South Africa Lotto winnings?

Tax on winnings depends on the country, the size of the prize and the year, and the rules change. Chancepedia does not give tax advice. Check the official tax authority page for your country, or ask a tax adviser.

What if I lose or damage my South Africa Lotto ticket?

Contact the operator as soon as you notice and ask what it can do. Rules differ, and a lost or damaged ticket can make a claim hard or impossible, so keep tickets safe.

A message says I won South Africa Lotto and asks me to pay a fee. Is it real?

No. A real lottery does not ask you to pay money or share bank details to release a prize, and you cannot win a lottery you did not enter. Do not reply and do not click any links. Report the message to the operator.
